Generally, registration for kindergarten begins in February of each year, while registration for grades 1-8 begins in April. Families are encouraged to register as early as possible because enrollment is limited. Forms necessary for registration are available through the school website, the Advancement Director, or the school administration office. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of thirty (30) students per grade. However, enrollment may be further limited as determined by SMS. The priority for accepting application is in the following order:
- Current students of SMS
- Siblings of current SMS students
- Children of members of St. Michael’s/St. Margaret Parish
- All other applicants.
In order to register for the 2011-2012 school year, a family will need to submit:
- Application form (with immunization records, Baptismal records, if applicable)
- Transcripts from previous school, if applicable
- Tuition contract
- FACTS form, if not paying tuition in full by July 31st
- Tuition assistance form, if applicable
- Service requirement memorandum
- A non-refundable check in the amount of $100 per family: $50 of which is the registration fee with remaining $50 as a deposit toward 2011-2012 tuition
Registration will not be considered complete until all applicable documents are submitted. Please direct questions about registering to the Advancement Director or the school administration office at 724-588-7040.

Explanation of tuition. Fees charged in the form of tuition cover only part of the cost of educating your child at Saint Michael School. It does not support the entire budget necessary to maintain operations for a school year. The actual cost per student for the 2010-2011 SMS school year was over $7100 per student. The parish provides a substantial subsidy to SMS. All students benefit from this subsidy regardless of any other financial assistance a family may receive. Additional sources of funding come from the SMS Endowment Fund, Car Raffle, the Annual Legacy Fund, the Erie Diocese, St. Michael Church’s 40 Club, the EITC (Pennsylvania Tax) program, and private donations and scholarships. However, all tuition payments, regardless of the amount, directly assist SMS in its day-to-day operations. Therefore, it is extremely important that the projected income from tuition is timely submitted in order to meet budget requirements.
The SMS Educational Advisory Council (EAC) is entrusted with the task of developing an annual budget and, as a part of that task, setting tuition rates and policies. The EAC takes all expected funding into account in the course of setting tuition rates and puts forth much effort making tuition as affordable as possible.
As of the 2011-2012 school year, the SMS principal will no longer be involved with collection of tuition or adjustments to the tuition contract. The EAC determined the role of the principal is better served without that task.
The tuition rates for the 2011-2012 school year are as follows:
| K-8 grade: |
1 child |
$2425 |
|
2 children |
$4100 |
|
3 children or more |
$5806 |
Tuition payments will be accepted by SMS in one of two ways:
- Paid in full by July 31, 2011; or
- Paid monthly via automatic checking transfer system through the FACTS program in the following options:
- half tuition by July 31, 2011, then half tuition by January 31, 2012
- a 10-month plan; or,
- a 12-month plan
All families are required to sign the SMS tuition contract indicating the method of payment chosen. The tuition contract is located in the appendix of this handbook and online at the SMS website.
Financial hardship
The EAC and administration of SMS understand that sometimes unforeseen events, such as job loss, take place that may affect a families’ ability to make timely tuition payments. If this happens, it is your responsibility to contact the school’s business office to make the necessary arrangements to adjust your tuition payment schedule. SMS will make every effort to secure additional assistance in the case of an unforeseen event. There is no guarantee that funding will be available. Any and all adjustments to a tuition contract shall be in writing and signed by the parent(s) and a member of the school finance committee.
Regardless of the reason of the nonpayment of tuition, the following procedure will take place for families enrolled and with the desire to remain at SMS:
- Parents will be notified via a letter and phone call from the school business office that the tuition payment was not received
- Parents will be given 30 calendar days to either a) bring the tuition current or b) to meet with representatives of the school business office and sign a tuition repayment agreement
- Enrollment of the student(s) will be terminated after the 30th calendar day if neither of these options is complete.
Past due balances
If your family has outstanding tuition due, registration of your child will not be accepted until the past due tuition is either paid in full or a tuition repayment agreement is signed and is being paid as agreed. No family will receive scholarship money or financial assistance without these items being in place.
Past due balances of families no longer enrolled in SMS will be sent a letter from the school business office for a final opportunity to pay the past due balance. If the past due balance is not paid, or agreed to be paid through a tuition repayment agreement, the unpaid balance will be turned over to a collection agency for formal collection procedures.

I owe St. Michael's a lot (as we all do who graduated from there). Were it not for the education and values I received there, I would not be in the position I am today.

Proud Parent of 4................. St. Michael School has provided my children with years of solid learning, but more than that, they have taught them in conjuction with what we do at home, to be good, respectful and helpful children. I don't think that would have been as easy a task if we had chosen public school. Religion five days a week served them much better than only on Sundays would have. Christian values inserted into all sporting events is priceless. It was worth every penny we invested and more.......Thank you St. Mikes!................September 2011

As I continued on with my academic pursuits in high school, I found that I was not only well prepared, but ahead of my peers in many areas, especially public speaking and written expression. St. Michael School instilled values within me that have helped me to make good decisions in high school and beyond. As a student, St. Michael School makes faith a part of your every day life which to me, is the most valuable gift you can give a child.

St. Michael School provided a solid foundation for my faith to grow and encouraged an individual relationship with God. It also set me up academically for advanced classes and leadership roles in extra-curricular activities.

A St. Michael School education enables students to develop their physical, moral and intellectual talents in an integrated fashion in the light of Jesus Christ. This is done by rigorous elementary education curriculum including a thorough foundation in Catholic doctrine, thereby forming the students in the harmony of faith and reason.

Our daughter Rachel, will be starting 2nd grade at St. Michael School and we could not be happier with the education she is receiving. We initially started Rachel in our local public school. She is a bright student and met all of their expectations, but it was clear that she was not being challenged. There were many factors that weighted into our decision to transfer Rachel to St. Mikes for first grade. Since her enrollment at St. Mikes, we have seen some very positive changes. The school and its teachers foster the drive to excel and to not only meet expectations, but to exceed them. By the end of the year, Rachel was reading chapter books!. Mrs. Cianci and Mrs. Best are both outstanding and have helped to motiviate Rachel to begin to meet her full potential. Thank you St. Michael School!!
